Bridgewater, NJ- The Somerset Patriots scored seven runs over the first two innings, and cruised behind starting pitcher and Yankees prospect Drew Thorpe for an 8-1 victory over the Hartford Yard Goats on Friday night at TD Bank Ballpark in Bridgewater, New Jersey. Thorpe did not allow a hit over the first five innings before Drew Romo and Colin Simpson had back-to-back doubles in the sixth inning, giving the Yard Goats their only run. Somerset had won three of the first four games of the six-game series. The Yard Goats bullpen of Fineas Del Bonta-Smith, Bryce McGowan, Dylan Spain and Alec Barger was solid, and surrendered just one run in 6.2 innings with six strikeouts.

Somerset scored a pair of runs in the first inning against Hartford starter Andrew Quezada. Caleb Durbin led off the frame with a single and later scored on a fielding error to make it 1-0 Patriots. The Yankees affiliate made it 2-0 on Grant Richardson’s two-out single, scoring Elijiah Dunham.

Patriots starter Drew Thorpe, who is listed by MLB.com as the Yankees #5 prospect, was terrific in his third start in the Eastern League. He retired 15 of the first 16 batters faced with six strikeouts over five no-hit innings. Drew Romo led off the sixth inning with a double, the Yard Goats first hit of the game, and Colin Simpson followed with a double, giving the Yard Goats their only run of the night. Thorpe ended up working into the seventh inning and finished with nine strikeouts while improving to 3-0 in the EL.

Somerset added five runs in the second inning to make it 7-0. Eduardo Torrealba began the rally with a leadoff single and scored on a double by Caleb Durbin. After Ben Rice walked, Agustin Ramirez singled home Durbin to make it 4-0. Elijah Dunham followed with a two-run double, scoring Rice and Ramirez and it was 6-0. Grant Richardson finished the scoring with an RBI single bringing home Dunham to make it 7-0.
